One more before the Heels

1 December 2009, 9 Months since the day

Quick update from me but I have to share some great news.  I was told last week that I am done with my Physio!  So Rehab is done.  We are now on to part 4 of the 4 part play -- way ahead of schedule

Hurrah!

I have been having both eastern and western Rehab to help the healing process.  And while I don't feel completely 100% back to normal it is a LOT better.

Here is a snap of what the eastern treatment looks like

yes it hurts  But only one more session left and clearly it is helping so we put up with a few minutes of discomfort.

I will send a picture of me in my high heels.  And maybe Santacon before that!!

Tah Tah for now

They try to make me go to rehab...

Shock Horror!! She does an Update -- 14 October

Where the heck have I been?!  Well the short version is that I got laid off work (sacked, fired, kicked to the can, made redundant) from the gig at expw - WHATEVER!!! and used my free time to chill and work on my walking.  I kept saying I will update the blog next week and then it was October...

I started rehab - Part III in my IV part play.

I was freaking out that it was going to be really horrific and painful.  Having not experienced much pain since that day I broke the Navicular, I wasn't thrilled about suddenly being prodded and pulled and made to cry all in the name of REHAB.  But I decided to ask the universe for a pleasant and pain free experience.  And then I met Mrs Lloyd early on a Wednesday morning and she told me that she didn't feel pain was all that productive actually!  She is very gentle and caring and the first person to explain why this damn bone takes 18 months to heal!

She is lovely and has been giving me great positive feedback and is so encouraging.  And I am getting better so quickly now.

When we got back from Cannes I had managed to get out of the Moonboot completely.  Which was great.  Shoes - on both feet.  Wonderful orthopedic old granny shoes on both feet.  It was heaven really.  Yeah it hurt sometime but so much better than wearing that stupid hunk of moon boot.

Cloud

So I would like to say I was panicked when I was laid off and I looked like a crazy woman to find a job.  I mean it was a RECESSION and I was screwed right?!  Actually no.  We did the math and figured out that we would be ok for a while so I just relaxed and enjoyed an extended vacation.   Thank goodness for good friends and strong networks.  I had three job opportunities within 1 week.  I was so humbled I cant tell you.  But something said wait, maybe it was trying to use the time to heal my foot a bit more - and a friend of my best friend Vim came through with a job at a large media company (owned by Rupert Murdoch).  I am working to the head of Customer Business Systems there and having fun doing what I do best - just getting stuff done.

I have a six month gig on a 2-3 year project so it's good money - rubbish commute-but good money and the work is not hard at all.  Nice people, warm environment and an amazing view.

So been keeping my head down doing work and a funny thing happened - my foot got a LOT better.  Maybe it was the physio, maybe the rehab (I said no no no) maybe it was working hard and having to commute: Walk to Tube, Tube, Train station, Train, Upstairs downstairs, 96 stairs at Camden town as the escalator is out -MICKEY MOO, I thought that was your job!!!!,  cross the street, down the block twice a day 5 days a week - you get the picture.  Maybe its knowing I am so close to wearing nice shoes.

One small setback during a trip to NYC in early September.

Lured by the sirens of Bergdoff's (you have to don't you) I stupidly tried to try on RIDICULOUS pair of YSL platforms They were beautiful.  They were on super-final-markdown-discount sale.  A complete stranger and a straight man, stopped to comment on how beautiful they were.  They should have been mine, but they made me go pale when I tried to take a step in them.

I hadn't felt that kind of pain since the day I broke my foot.  It hurt and kept hurting even after I took off the precious.   Mega limp and I was in a total shit mood for the rest of the day.  I was so scared that this was the future - a future with no nice shoes.  Grateful as I was that I could walk at all - greedy for my full life back. Mad at both.

But in the end, it was ok - just too much too soon.  I am constantly reminded that this was a 'nasty break' and it will take a full 18 months to heal - so going from soft geriactric shoes straight into 6-inch YSL strappy heels, before the 6th anniversary was a lot like taking the piss actually.

The quote of the blog goes to a lady in Bergdoff's who was so cool and shopping with her young teen aged daughter and said:
"Leanne if you actually expect me to let you get a pair of shoes today, you need to start finding some serious options - NO Showgirl shoes!"

My unsolicited response from behind the rack - Go on Mom!  We both had a giggle

One of my new friends at the Media company  felt so bad for me, and my lost YSL sandals, she GAVE me two pair of killer heels she bought in the sales (NEW LOOK rocks) - to motivate me to heal.  Bless her!!  I try them on (sitting down) regularly and they are even nicer than the ones that got away.

6 Months down 12 to go

So I had my 6 month check up (can you believe it?!) with the docs and they are very pleased.  "It's fine - get on with your life, see you in 6 months."  Waited over 90 minutes for that thorough examination and detailed feedback!

I got to see the Xrays (The screws look horrific) much longer than I expected.  But they are doing the job.

I am good.  My limp is pretty much gone as well.  I did real running in the park with the dogs on Saturday and I have worn my first heels -- thanks to Vimi, who also gifted me a pair of suede boots with 1.5 inch heels.  I can wear them all day.

I still have sore stiff days but I am starting to feel normal again.

So My left foot is really healing -thanks for hanging in there with me.  My next and probably last update to my blog when I am wearing the Louboutins again   I'm thinking for Santa maybe - Ho Ho Ho

Bye all -thanks for reading

Yeah Baby

Oh yeah, Wold and the Norwegian do it again! 19 June 2009

A very quick update and shout out to WOLD and the Norwegian who hosted Mickey Moo and I (And 5 other friends) for a slamming and I mean SLAMMING party at Home House.

The theme was "Summer of Love and it did not disappoint.

Even Mickey (I don't do Fancy Dress) Moo got into  it and another first -- he danced  A LOT, must have been the hair.  I danced too in the moonboot and the Navicular wasn't giving me any grief - nor was it too sore the next day.  Yes I was sober as well -- shock horror!

Also wonderful to see our friend and favourite Italian Gudrun back in London again so soon.  With her gorgeous honey bunch - Axel too - Many thanks to Gudrun for loaning me her MEGA hoops

Sweet Baby James (aka the lost boy) was there too - getting LOTS of attention (when you see his 'costume' you will understand why).

Eva was way too pretty to be in Fancy Dress

New friend Michelle was all ready to GO-GO in a bang on-theme pyschodelic dress.

Ivar was way laid back cool and Marie was styling in Vintage I loved her hair which was all hers and so LONG!

Great fun had by all - and W&N threw a happening pre party to allow us to get into it by getting ready together.  I think she is wasting her talent in the world of Software and as a super successful businesswoman - Makeup Artist is her natural calling I think.

Here are the snaps. Enjoy

Getting ready - Make-up Artist at work

Axel is ready to party and yes that is his real hair

Rule Britannia

I could really murder a cuppa tea, 21 June 2009

On 10 June 2009 at approximately 11am BST, Renee became a fully-fledged subject of the realm.

I took my oath of Citizenship and got my papers!  So I am now a dual Citizen of both the USA and the UK.  Or as my friend Matt said in the quote of the week:
"welcome to the two most oppressive tax regimes in the world"
The day was very special -- more special than I thought it was going to be actually and I felt a bit emotional.  Very happy and very proud to finally make a commitment to the country I have called home for nearly 12 years.  Ironically being British now means I can do a very British thing and leave.  I don't have to worry about violating the time restrictions on my ILtR visa and I can go anywhere for as long as I want and know my right to live and work in the UK is assured.  Additionally I have EU citizenship too - which means I can live and work in any EU state - awesome and especially important for someone who owns property in France!

Camden Town Hall for a Public Citizenship Ceremony

So the Ceremony was longer than expected but that was mostly getting set up and waiting for them to register everyone and check that they had the right documents to participate.  The Mayor of Camden was there and gave us our certificates on behalf of her Majesty the Queen (clearly she had other more pressing plans or I'm sure she would have attended in person).  He congratulated us and shook each of our hands - which took forever as there were about 50 people or more taking the oath that day.  I passed the time by making updates on Twitter.

Being British Lesson 1:  Learn to Queue

Random attendees at my ceremony included:  Emma Thompson and her rather 'dishy' hubbie Greg Wise (he was the hottie in Sense and Sensibility) who were attending to support their adopted son who was taking his oath that day too.  And the Ozzie, Kristin, who lives near by in Camden and used to work for me at COLT -- also taking his oath with his other half.

Can you see them?  Don't worry we saw them up close it's really them

I carried my Rule Britannia, sequenced Union Jack flag clutch that Lady Chatterley gave me to celebrate my joining the "sinking ship".

I love this bag, it's very me

And Mickey Moo who had worked a night shift and had just 1 hour of sleep went with me to take photos and support me.  He also treated me to Champagne at the Long Bar in St Pancras station and then Lunch at the pub.  How very British!  It was a really good day.  So happy to finally be a citizen here - now I really could murder a cuppa...

I think the Queen looks terrific today

And now for Navicular Progress Report

On Friday the 12, I went back to UCLH to have my post CT Scan appointment.  This was the big one as it was the update as to whether or not I could come out of the Moonboot and if I needed a second surgery.

In the waiting room, I met a girl who had just broken her foot a week prior.  She didn't require any surgery and was hoping to go into an air cast that day--lucky dog, 1 week in non-weight bearing plaster is NOTHING!  She too had a scootering accident; a car ran over her foot!  She was full of questions and excitement about moving to an air cast.  I hope I didn't scare her when she asked how long I had worn mine and I said just over 2 months!

The other person waiting with us also had a broken Navicular (and two toes and some other foot bone I'd never heard of).  He had been in non-weightbearing plaster for a month and was also hoping to move to an air cast on the day.  He too had his Navicular pinned and was told he was in for a long haul.  How did he do this you ask?   Well I did too....

Skydiving.

Brilliant, it's my new answer when I'm asked by taxi drivers (who always ask).  It's way more sexy than a boring scooter accident.

So the doctor saw me in what was almost on time (just an hour late) for UCLH.  And......

The news is good.  It continues to heal well.  They are not thinking I will need another surgery now.  They want me to start Physiotherapy - hurrah!

Sadly you don't get to have a big moonboot burning party straightaway.  I still have to wear the bloody Moon Boot for a little while longer but I am working my way out of it (walking indoors without it and a bit outdoors without it) starting today.  Ok so I've been walking without it indoors for weeks but we didn't tell the doctor this.  The big difference is I have his blessing and I can do this outside now as well for short walks - like to the pub.  I can take it off for good, as soon as I feel ready. Yippie!

Thanks to you all for your support, prayers and positive thoughts for me.   Thanks to Mickey Moo for looking after me the way he has for these past 111 days (I'm not counting!)

So my first physio appointment is not until 29 July!  Yes July  - bless the NHS.  So since I have plenty of time, I plan to be well and truly out of the space gear by then.  I even celebrated by buying brand new and rather fetching pair of old woman sandals (the only things that would fit over the bump -- I do hope that bump goes away.  The bump is a bit of scar tissue where the broken bone used to be.  I even braved having a pedicure.  Poor girl was terrified, not me, the manicurist.  We decided, wisely, to skip the massage.  But she made it through and my toes match, for the first time since the accident.

So happy days.  The walking means that it hurts more than it did while I was in the cast, but its more like discomfort than actual pain.  Mickey Moo bought me a new cane that folds up so I can store it in my bag.  I will need the cane more when I start walking outdoors in shoes.  I love it because it doesn't look like the NHS-issue arm crutch (aka gimp stick ) that is the walking aid of choice for all the local crack heads!  Plus having a cane will aid in getting cabs to stop for me, when I don't have the very visible, glow in the dark, moonboot on anymore.

So thats me done for a while, I don't go back for another check up at the hospital until September, Hurray!.

Next update coming soon to talk about the Party of the Year!  Summer of Love at Home House with Wold!  You don't want to miss this update - it was legend!

Stardate 20090613 -- I always knew that home girl had better taste than that

Hi all, I can't believe its been a month since my last blog entry, I must be getting better...

Star Trek baby!

I’ve seen the new Star Trek three times now, does that make me sad?  I love Star Trek and I have always loved it.  Cheers to my Dad for getting me excited about it when I was young.

I have seen all the films, STNG and Classic Star Trek Series all multiple times.  I did lose the faith a bit with Deep Space (Bus Station) 9 but I loved Voyager (Janeway rocks) and have seen a few of the Enterprise series but never got into it I am afraid –  Scott Bakula, ah no – He’s Quantum Leap mate – unless Enterprise is actually just an extended episode of Quantum Leap—that could work.

To call LT Uhura a role model and an inspiration is totally cliché but I did join the army and I was a signal officer so I can’t believe that decision wasn’t subconsciously influenced by my devotion to Star Trek.  Hey I suspect she was the first woman on TV (black or white) who had a real job and wasn’t there just to be the future love interest.  She was the only woman on the Enterprise with a proper job (respect to Nurse Chapel).  So she was a role model for me and I am so glad she inspired so many women of that era.

Clearly taken before the foot incident

I won’t spoil the plot for those who haven’t seen it yet (what is wrong with you?!) but I always suspected that home girl had better taste than having a thing for a man she watched chase women on every planet he visited… nuf said.

So in my alternative reality, I am not writing this blog about a broken foot – that is good to know.

Chelsea Flower Show Virgins, 22 May

So Mickey moo and I went to the Chelsea flower show.  We finally got our acts together and got tickets for the event.  Mick loves these things and wanted to get some ideas for the redo of our back yard, we were Chelsea virgins but enjoyed the day immensely and having the big boot wasn’t that much of an issue.  We took plenty of breaks, despite a small glass of Pimms being a whooping £4.00 – extortion I think.  Mick got lots of inspiration for our garden and for his art work and most of all saw what people are charging for products like his.

Some pics from the day:

Entrance Walk - lovely

The Bucket List

Hi-de-hoe sports fans, 13 May 2009

We have been very busy since the disappointment of the delayed release from MoonBoot Penitentiary.

While that still sucks a lot, something happened that weekend and I just started getting on with it.  I have given up my crutches indoors and have been doing more walking around the neighborhood with a single crutch or none at all.  Hell I even went to Selfridge's to go shopping.  But sufficed to say I have had another 'healing spurt'  which means I just feel more confident walking and have a lot less pain and fatigue when I put full weight down on my left foot in the moonboot.

But the big news is I am walking (indoors) with no moonboot at all.  Tah dah!  Baby steps but I can walk slowly on my bare foot.

Hurray, so even though I am still in this bloody Moonboot prison for another 3-4 weeks, I figure that if its not causing pain - real pain, then I can keep pushing the boundaries and start my rehab.

The only continued frustration is that 10 days later I still don't have an appointment for the CT Scan.  So I called the hospital today only to be informed that they only got my file (from 1 floor down) YESTERDAY.  Amazing.   So now I have to wait another 1-2 weeks before they send me a letter for the appointment.  I think not.  I will be sending a letter to Dr Madhav directly to say enough already.  The NHS is great for critical care - and god bless that, but once you are not critical, your service goes right down the swanie!

I guess its back to the web for do-it-yourself Physical Therapy for the old Navicular.  So that's the Navicular update done.

So since we last spoke -- we have been visited and visited and visited by many a far-away friend and kin alike.

Sunday, 3 May - meine Damen und Herren, Ich hole Ihnen the one the only GUDRUN!!!

So our favourite Italian came to visit us over the weekend and she didn't disappoint.  Looking fabulous and bringing lots of yummy treats from the Capital of Sugar and Dessert - Wien baby.  She was in town because Her Grand Mistress Lady P was also visiting from LA (Bringing us Swine Flu - but I digress).  These girls were part of the now famous Munich Crew at Viag and hadn't seen one another in like 8 years (shocking)!

So how else to celebrate the reunion, but with a boozie BBQ at Casa Lyme.

Gudrun performs a traditional Viennese Waltz with Peppers

Mickey Moo once again was the host with the most, cooking like a slave on the Barbie. so we had meat for the Carnivores and non-meat for the Veggies.  Gudrun and I snuck out earlier that day for a spot of shopping at Selfridges (we love Selfridges). Then it was party time at Casa Lyme.  Pasy looks fantastic as always - WOLD and the Norwegian were here (of course) as was Big Daddy Raymondo.  The wine flowed and flowed - which explains the headache the next day -- so very worth it I am afraid!

Big shout out to Pasy for NOT infecting us with Swine Flu!

Thursday 7 May - Philly, Gatwick, Camden, Gatwick, Nice Cannes
My poor mum and dad have come for a visit and we made them do that evil commute in one day.  They were ultimately rewarded with a lovely long weekend in Cannes and the French Riviera darling.  This was my first trip since the accident and I gotta tell you.  Shout out for Aer Lingus.  They so rock.  I was well impressed with how organised and well run that airline was.  WAY BETTER THAT BA!!!!  Value for Money and the rest - how about just plain old professional not that is a pleasant change.

So we arrived in Cannes around 11pm local time (or 20+ hours after my parents started their day.  They even volunteered to sleep in the Cabin (it's a 3-sided room NOT a building outside made of logs).  Had them up early the next day for breakfast at Cafe Lux and the first of many Ham and Cheese sandwiches!

Cannes was in good form, preparing for the film festival since it was due to start the day after we were due to leave.  The weather was amazing - not hot not cold just right

The Itinerary
Friday - Cannes
and the tour train up to the Souk, Dinner with Bruce
Saturday - Coast Road to St Tropez (following the Harley Bikers convention) however something about Bikers speaking french - not so menacing actually - we had ham and cheese sandwiches there
Sunday Morning -  Lie in for the folks (ha they got up at dawn and took pictures!)
Sunday Afternoon - Eze (ham and cheese sandwiches) and Monaco - dinner at Caffe Roma (sadly no ham and cheese)
Monday Morning - clean up and head to the airport - where we had time for a ham and cheese sandwich

Dad was in his element - camera never far from his hand.  We found easy food, introduced them to our friend Bruce who is a few years younger but they all got on and reminisced about living in Connecticut.  Did I mention dad was taking pictures!?  I got to treat my mother to one of my favourite views in the world - the med from the balcony of Chateau Eze.  If you haven't seen it - it was in the movie The Bucket List, and I couldn't agree more.  That was my gift, That view and a very civilized glass of pink champagne on the terrace there.

Before I end with the snaps, I want to say that I was so happy to have my mom and dad visit with me.  I miss them so much!  I love them both so much and I am really thankful that they came to see me and Mickey moo.

A final shout out and very big thank you to Lily and Braveheart for coming to look after our puppies while we were gone.

OK here are a few of the pics:

Beautiful view at Saint-Jean Cap-Ferrat -- the vista isn't bad either

Climbing to Eze (yes I went all the way up and down in the Moon Boot)

Nearly there Dad, and yes it will be worth it!

Happy Mother's Day

Monaco - getting ready for the Grand Prix (sometime you have all the luck eh)

That's all folks - next time look for my floral update from the Chelsea Flower Show....

Ken Lee, 1 May

doing a quick blog today as I am way behind and want to get this out today

The Marathon - London Style
First a big SHOUT OUT to my neighbor and dear friend lady Chatterley who ran the London Marathon on Sunday.  It was a glorious day but way too hot to be running.  She is amazing and did the run by herself on her 29th birthday no less.  She did have the motivation of knowing her lover (aka Lady Chatterley's lover) was waiting in the pub to cheer her on at Mile 14 and Mile 22.  She stopped to say hi to Mick (she actually ran backwards to go back to say hi to him) then stopped to give a hug to me and WOLD at mile 24.  She looked entirely too fresh to have been running for 4+ hours!  And she was in the pub not long after with her chirpy smile and was happy as larry to be celebrating her first marathon and birthday.  Cheers Lady Chat - you are my hero!

Second most inspirational sight on the day - a man running -- with crutches!!!!  See we are all full of excuses but some Just F-ing Do IT

Ken Lee - or Why YouTube Rocks
this is the single funniest thing I have seen all week - maybe all month.  Every time I watch it or think about it I break out in a giggle.  you must watch and have the volume on

The quote of the week goes to my sister who said after seeing this clip:
"I think I peed on myself in the office."
Bid Girl -
so since breaking the Navicular, I have been doing my best to keep contributing at work - which is no mean task when traveling is such a pain.  So I have transformed myself in to BID WOMAN.  I am churning out bids at a speed and efficiency that harkens me back to my earlier days consulting at the feet of the master, the legendary, Lovie Jackson - all hail.  But now, all these years later, when I am "the Partner" - why am I still up at all hours writing the bids?

Fortunately, I do enjoy them (I know I am weird) and sooner or later one of them is going to turn into a gig - which will 'pay back' all this on my butt time.  Then we will school the young Jedi...

Twitter - Again
I know I am banging on about this but I love it.  Finally social networking that I totally get.  Best of all we got our first Booking Enquiry for the flat in Cannes off of someone who follows our @no17cannes ID on Twitter.  Totally free and got a prime season booking from it.  ROCKING!!  I love the random collection of humanity on there and how its being used for pretty mainstream stuff (Center for Disease Control is using Twitter to do broadcast SwineFlu updates).  My @neeneeuk id is being followed by Paulo Coelho - how cool is that!?

Finally, Walking and the 9 week Scan
so after the big news of me walking without crutches in the moonboot I was really expecting some excellent news at the docs today. I think they say:  Pride cometh before the fall.

I went to the hospital for my 9 week CT scan and Xrays.  This was the big one to tell me if I could get out of the cast and start Physio (Part III - Rehab of my 4-part-Navicular play)  Well: Computer says NO.  I don't  get the CT scan until next week (or later) and I am still in the blasted Air Cast.  AND they are still not ruling out another operation on the foot.

I believe the proper term for how I am feeling right now is 'BALLS

Mom look away--

FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK!!!!!

OK, I feel better now.  Well the good news is I get to Priority Board when I fly to France on my holiday!  Oh, and there are now less shoes to pack as well - benefits abound.  Do worry chappies - it's just a small set back....We will get there eventually.

We have DJ LA PAYZ - and Our Favourite Italian, Gudrun in town this weekend so this will no doubt lift my mood!

Tootles!  And remember when you are feeling low - KEN LEE!!!!!  I feel better already!

Random Icelantic Tunes and the Credit Crunch Myth

Saturday, 18 April  - I told you this would start a Trend

I am so loving the serendipity that is watching music videos on a very lazy Saturday.  I love Music Videos, they are my perfect background noise.   As a teenager in the 80's who literally grew up with MTV (remember when they played like only 6 videos -- which ironically  is more than they play on MTV now - it left a mark on me for sure.

So today we are chilling, updating the No17 (www.no17cannes.com) sites on the ole MAC and I put videos on in the background.  When on comes this wonderful song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CF7sER73TY

I mean how random is that - I told you it would start a trend - I am super cool like that.   Its a great song as well.  May have to get into Ms Torrini.  Pay attention to how she breaks her foot(leg)....

Who would have thought I would see the Navicular idolized in film.  Awesome.

The weekend was quiet and mostly spent at home.  The weather is turning blooming lovely about now.

Saturday night --OK I want to start by saying:  what a big farce this whole Credit Crunch malarkey is!?!

So Mickey Moo wakes up in a very happy mood saying he wanted to have Mussels for dinner - easy enough to facilitate in the Big Smoke.

I text the LymeStreet Massive and honorary members WOLD and the Norwegian to invite them  along.  Immediately W & N come back to say yes.  And I try to reserve a table.  Both outlets of our favourite Mussels Restaurant - booked solid.  I tried three other restaurants ranging from Value to Pricy - booked solid.  Finally, we needed Big James to call the owner of a local haunt in Camden to get us in - at 9:30 at night!

All hail Big James and I say again, What Credit Crunch?!  You still cant get a table for 4 on a Saturday night in Londontown.

We had a wonderful meal thanks to our friends at Gilgamesh Camden Market (http://www.gilgameshbar.com/).  We love that place and can NEVER fault the food -- awesome and always way too much of it.   And we witnessed a restaurant first - WOLD actually had too much food!  After a great dinner,  W&N were kind enough to host us at their club, the wonderful Home House.  I so do enjoy a walk in their wonderful world and we hung out in the new part of the club and listened to cheesy music and chatted with property moguls and the Dentist to the stars.

Home House New Extension Bar

WOLD is clearly one of the Fabulous People

But then I was tired and remembered that I wasn't one of the "fabulous people" (anymore) and rather a very tired girl who was ready to go home. -- TAXI

Still, Mick and I agreed it was one our best nights out in a while - Many thanks to WOLD And the Norwegian for yet another fab Saturday night.

Monday, 20 April  - A very big day -- Part II

Today, I woke after a rather unsettled, nervous sleep to get to a 9am appointment to submit my application for British Citizenship.

After 11 and half years, I am finally taking the plunge.  I was worried because I had mislaid my citizenship exam test certificate, which I had to have.  So I got up this morning at 6am to look for them and found them in all places -- the filing cabinet!  This coupled with me only realising yesterday that I had used an OLD version of the form for REFERRALS (the part filled out by other people!).  So I was sure that this alone would have me kicked to the curb and have wasted the £45 appointment fee - but fear not, it was all good and my application was officially submitted today.  To add to the joy, it was the same lady who did our paperwork for our wedding.  Awesome.

So today's quote goes to our dear friend Lady Chatterley, who upon hearing my application was accepted, wrote to say:
Do we get to throw you a party where we drape you in a union jack and eat fish and chips with warm beer? Please say yes....!!!
Ah the sublime joy of becoming British !

So another seriously big day for the kid, which was highlighted by a new navicular party trick.

So in trying to build up to walking with just one crutch -- I discovered TODAY -- I can walk without the crutches.  Ta Dah!!!!
Yes-sir-re, about 5 or 6 steps in a row, without any crutches.  Ha Ha.  This was my week 7 present to myself, (and my Mom).

I will a make a video of it soon - you can marvel at the wonder that is the amazing healing Navicular.

That's all friends enjoy and be careful out there.

SHOUTS:
Special shout out for my little lost boy TLJ and our surprise visitor Miss County Durham who both popped in to visit withme.  Please check out baby James on Twitter - (@weightmatters) and MCD as well (@indigoseahorse1) they both need more followers.

Second shout out for Miss Susan Boyle on the last Britain's Got Talent 2009 - you have to see this!  Don't feel bad if you start to cry - we did too

Toot Toot eh Beep Beep

14 April, She works hard for the Money, So hard for it honey

Last week was a busy one, back to work full time and full on.  I went to a conference, was in the office everyday and had to negotiate two days of 'formal' work clothing with the moon boot.  Fashion forward as it is, the avantgarde accessory does make more pedestrian work clothing look - well more pedestrian.  A girl has to think on her feet (or foot as the case may be).

The hard permanent cast meant that I rediscovered the world of hold ups (Stockings that stay up with out a garter belt).  Now I have never had much luck with these.  Having been blessed with "traditional thighs".  This means they aren't straight and even in my triathlon days they were never 'slim' so I always found that hold ups - didn't.  Historically, I have more than once been embarrassed by the lovely lacy topped stocking rolling or falling down my leg - usually in the middle of Oxford Street or as I was walking out of a CXO meeting.   It wasn't cleaver - nor alluring.  So I gave up on the whole hold up-vibe forever - until I had no choice and found a secret.

If you find traditional hold ups a challenge - get the 'BIG GIRL' hold ups.  Don't get all snobby and sizeist about it, the secret is to get something with a wider opening at the thigh.  M&S (Marks & Spenser for foreigners reading this) has hold ups in sizes (XS to XL).

I even found that XL (Which I ordered in both) was actually too big in one style but perfect and very comfortable (no circulation stopping rubber band effect) for another style.  Must most importantly, they HOLD UP, don't fall down or go walking, without me.

The moon boot means I can first put the stocking on my foot and then the protective 'Britney Spears - hit me baby one more time' sock on, followed by the moon boot.  Which is - well fetching.

Hit me baby one more time

Toot Toot, eh Beep Beep

Now I don't imagine that the hold ups will be my first choice full time.   I rather like the gusseting affect of full-on, passion-killing pantie hose, but in summer when its too hot (ha I live in England) or for a secret little flirtation, I can see me pulling out the hold ups once I am freed from moon boots and other gimpy accoutrement.

Do give the 'sized' hold ups a try if you find the standard sizes a pain.

12 April Easter Sunday, A weekend of sloth

Easter in the United Kingdom is celebrated with a long weekend and Friday and Monday as national holidays -

Normally, we would be traveling like the rest of Christendom in fact we were headed to France this weekend but that was before the accident.

Now we are rainy and chilly London wondering what to do with ourselves.  I wanted to go shopping but even with the walking cast this is more challenging than it should be.

Thank goodness for TV and on Demand films.

Big event on Friday - I took the bus.  Went by bus to Hamsptead to the nail salon as I had to have one of my nails repaired.  The repair was free so I wasn't happy about spending £14 for traveling by cab.  So instead Mick went with me and it was a 80p bus journey.

I am so much more mobile and I am thinking of taking the bus to work next week - I will go off peak to ensure I get a seat and its not too busy.  But its costing nearly 30 quid each day I do the commute.  Even though I can expense it, its a lot of cash especially when compared to a max of £4 to take the bus.

So today we took the dogs to the little park - a nice easy walk for me on the sticks (yes I still have the damn sticks) .  Lola is a nightmare she is so aggressive.  We really need to get some help in getting her socialised and dealing with her behaviour.  Our neighbors all have issues with their doggies.  We thinking of trying to get Caesar the Dog Whisperer to come over and do a deal for the street

OK so I promised my husband to make him some Sunday Brunch - Salmon and Eggs and toast, so I need to get cracking - eggs- cracking Hilarious!  I need to stop hanging out with Braveheart.

Happy Holidays y'all.

Space Travel is not for Wimps

Tuesday, April 7th - Space Clothing pros and cons

So it's day 4 with the freedom that comes with having a moon boot - that said, space clothing is not for everyone.   It takes a kind of coolness and aplomb to pull it of with style. I do see people looking at me with envy - I cant blame them, it's just so damn fetching.

Pros (besides being bang on trend and totally fashion forward)

  1. I can take it off - I could go on an on on this topic alone but just being able to separate from the cast is awesome
  2. I can wash (gross out warning):  so my right leg and foot are full of dead skin – imagine peeling after a sunburn – on steroids. I have been using the Bliss diamond foot file, on my leg and the skin is still coming off still.  Before I was due to take my 2nd shower and took the long ‘Britney Spears’ over the knee sock off my leg – and a cascade of dead skin fell out of the sock, it made the floor brown, solid brown! It was gross beyond measure.  But with washing and exfoliation it should stop shedding sometime around Labor day
  3. I can start to move my ankle and foot (see video blog) I have to draw the alphabet with my toes to practice range of motion - the first time I got to g and then screamed in pain!  Now I am up U before it hurts too much

    prepare to be totally amazed

  4. Much easier to walk around and get up and down stairs.  Its faster walking but slower on the stairs.  But I don’t have to balance anymore and just resting my foot makes all the difference from full weight and balance all on the right.  I went to get my nails done in Hampstead on Saturday and did the same walk as from when we went to see Watchmen which I found really challenging on the day.  Saturday’s walk was a breeze, I walked to the tube, in got cash , out and then I went down the hill to the bus stop, it was WAY easier and faster.  I felt like I could go shopping and walk around, take the bus home.  I almost did – but instead I hailed a cab – no sense getting ahead of myself.
  5. No more fragmen shots! That is truly something I won't miss

Cons:

  1. It hurts more than the normal cast, it's never just right, either too tight or too loose, it rubs it aches and it just hurts.  To borrow a phase from my friend ‘pain is productive’ she isn't’t a sadist but rather this was from here first labour.  Now  am not popping out a baby but I realise it needs to hurt to get it to get better – sucks a lot
  2. I feel exposed when its off, the first night sleeping was hellish.  I got no sleep, I was completely stressed out and just felt so sore and vulnerable all night.  But thankfully the next night was completely fine.  Still it feels exposed and more achy when its off
  3. Stiff need crutches, but that will reduce to one soon
So all and all it's a good thing.

See you soon looking forward to bearing weight over the next couple of day and how to modify the Wii Fit exercises to do them with the air cast MOON BOOT
